The Chapter is now accepting applications for the Wolfgang Freitag Professional Development Award of $1000 in funding to defray the costs associated with a variety of professional development activities.

To be considered for this award, applicants should submit a proposal via this form that includes:
A detailed account 250-500 words long explaining what the award will help you accomplish and how it will contribute to the field of art librarianship
A statement describing the financial need of the project or initiative, and a budget detailing a total cost breakdown (e.g. travel and lodging expenses, conference registration fees, workshop fees, course tuition, materials costs, details of additional funding from other sources, etc.)

2020 Elmar W. Seibel Scholarship Recipient

The Executive Committee of ARLIS/NA New England is pleased to announce that Clara Scholtz is the recipient of this year’s Elmar W. Seibel Scholarship!

Clara is a Master of Library and Information Science student at Simmons University concentrating in Cultural Heritage Informatics, as well as a practicing artist. She is coming to her studies at Simmons with experience working in the Downtown Art Center (DAC) in Los Angeles as an instructor and assisting them with the organization of their collection of artwork and archival materials. She also worked as a gallery guide and attendant for the Dia Art Foundation.

“I intend to work as an art librarian and educator upon completing my MLIS, at a public library, academic library, or museum,” Clara shares. “A goal of mine as an informational professional is to increase access to cultural heritage materials and knowledge for communities of marginalized people, including people with disabilities. I deeply appreciate ARLIS/NA New England Chapter’s support of this goal, thank you.”

2021 ARLIS/NA Virtual Conference Attendance Awards (previously Conference Travel Award)

PURPOSE:  To encourage the professional development of ARLIS/NA New England Chapter members and local library students interested in arts librarianship by supporting registration fees for the ARLIS/NA virtual conference.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must be members of ARLIS/NA New England Chapter for one full year and members of ARLIS/NA (requirement waived for current students and unemployed members). 
  • Applicants must be unable to receive full institutional funding toward ARLIS conference attendance.
  • Preference will be given to first-time attendees, to those who are participating in the conference as a speaker, moderator, session recorder or serving as a committee member, and to those financially impacted by the pandemic.
  • Students are encouraged to apply. Student applicants should be living in or attending an LIS program in New England and have a demonstrated interest in arts librarianship. 
  • Members who have been financially impacted by the pandemic are encouraged to apply. Also note that 2021 Chapter dues have been waived for members who are currently unemployed. 

We welcome applications from those whose identity, experiences, scholarship, and/or service have prepared them to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in our Chapter and the profession.

AWARD: Up to 4 awards may be granted to members of the ARLIS/NA New England Chapter and local library students interested in arts librarianship to cover registration fees for the 2021 ARLIS/NA virtual conference to be held Tuesday, May 11 through Thursday, May 13, 2021.

Within one month of conference attendance, recipients will submit a 500-word summary of their conference experience and how it has enriched their professional goals.

Call for Nominations: Chapter Officers for ARLIS/NA New England

ARLIS/NA New England is seeking nominations (including self-nominations) for several officers on the Chapter’s Executive Committee to begin in January 2021. Open positions are: 

  • Vice-Chair/Chair/Past Chair (3 years)This position is a 3 year commitment, with the first year as Vice-Chair assisting the Chair, filling in if the Chair is unable to serve, and assisting with general functions of the committee. The second year, this person will serve as Chair, acting as chief executive officer of the Chapter, planning its activities, and drafting annual reports. In the third year, as Past Chair, they will serve in an advisory role and assist with general functions of the committee. 
  • Secretary (2 years)The secretary is responsible for Chapter documents, including meeting minutes, and assists with the general functions of the committee.
  • Public Relations & Web Support (2 years)The Public Relations & Web Support officer maintains the Chapter website and social media accounts, coordinates activities to build membership, and assists with the general functions of the committee. 

To qualify for Executive Committee positions, one must be a current member of both ARLIS/NA and the New England Chapter. In response to the current circumstances and in the hopes of encouraging greater participation, if any member is currently unemployed and elected to the executive committee, the Chapter will waive their Chapter dues and sponsor their 2021 ARLIS/NA membership with the possibility of continuing this in 2022. We’re grateful to our colleagues in the New York Chapter for this idea.

2020 ARLIS/NA Annual Conference Travel Award Winner

The ARLIS/NA New England Chapter is pleased to announce that Abigail (Abi) Sweeney is the recipient of the chapter’s 2020 ARLIS/NA Annual Conference Travel Award. Abi has been working at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design since 2006, and is currently serving as the vice-moderator of the Art and Design School Library (ADSL) Division of ARLIS/NA.  At the 2020 ARLIS/NA Annual Conference, she will be stepping into her new role as moderator of the division.  During the conference, Abi and the current moderator will be reviewing their progress to date on a comprehensive report of the ADSL Division, to include current and ongoing challenges.  In particular, Abi will be covering her findings on issues related to staffing and professional development. The final report is scheduled to be presented at the 2021 conference in Montreal. 

The ARLIS/NA Annual Conference Travel Award will help defray Abi’s expenses related to attending the 2020 ARLIS/NA Annual Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. We would like to extend our thanks to our chapter’s donors, whose contributions help make this award possible.

Call for Nominations for Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect

Call for nominations (including self-nominations) for the position of Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect of ARLIS/NA New England is open! This is a three year position. For 2020, this person would be serving as Vice-Chair; 2021, as Chair; 2022, as Past-Chair.

As of now, the position descriptions are as follows:

Vice-Chair [Year 1]: Assists the Chairperson, act as chief executive officer in the event the Chairperson is unable to serve, assists with general functions of the Chapter Board, and coordinates fundraising as needed.

Chair [Year 2]: Acts as chief executive officer, plans the activities of the Chapter, shall be a member ex-officio of all special project committees of the Chapter, and shall be responsible for the drafting of the mid-year and annual reports.

Past-Chair [Year 3]: Serves an advisory role, as needed, during the year; administers the chapter’s awards, and assists with general functions of the Chapter Board.

We’ll be accepting nominations for Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect until November 25th. If multiple nominations are received, an election will be held and current members can vote for 30 days. If only one nomination is received, a 30 day open comment period for current members will be held. If no comments or additional nominations are received, the election will be called by acclamation.

Bookworks Meetup – Thursday, November 14th, 2019

Join ARLIS/NA New England for a meetup with colleagues at the Bookworks exhibition at Tufts. We will speak with curator Dina Deitsch and Darin Murphy of the SMFA library at Tufts, look at the work on display, and then head over to Semolina for dinner/drinks with anyone who would like to join.
